EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
