Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
