No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
